Musically Opinionated: Teyonna’s Top Ten – 7/15/2022

Summer travels have me off my game. I’ve been sleeping on these flights and not listening to music y’all! But I’m back and there’s a lot of catching up to be done so let’s jump right on in shall we:

Easy Lover (feat. Big Sean) – Ellie Goulding (July 15, 2022)

Listen, dance music is making a comeback and I’m so here for it. I was an Ellie Goulding fanatic back in 2011, and this song with Big Sean was a pairing I was NOT expecting to pop up on my Release Radar this week, and hey, I’m not mad at it. I liked the song 4 seconds in, the opening rhythm did it for me right away.

Holy Spirit – K CAMP (July 8, 2022)

K CAMP kinda go. For real. Man makes bops and I keep him in steady rotation on my daily playlists, honestly. I wish I had a more articulate explanation for why I like his music so much, but I don’t because I just do, and I think sometimes that’s good enough.

Solid (ft. Blxst and Kehlani) – Burna Boy (July 7, 2022)

I know y’all have probably already listened to the greatness that is this whole album and you don’t need my co-sign, but in case you’re a little late to the party, go turn this album on and find your faves to dance through the rest of summer (honorable mention to “For My Hand” featuring Ed Sheeran, also a favorite from the album).

Achy – Phabo (July 6, 2022)

Phabo is back on my list again, and as far as I’m concerned, he can’t miss. His voice reminds me of a tone child between Lyfe Jennings and Tyrese, but the music reminds me of early Trey Songz and Jeremih, with a heavier bass to modernize the whole sound– and it all just works for me. I think his album artworks give you the vibes pretty accurately, too. Maybe it’s just me.

Settled (ft. Russ) – Rexx Life Raj (July 15, 2022)

Something is in the water this week, because this is another song that I turned on and liked instantly. Rexx Life Raj has been on my list before as well and now we have a brand new album to dive into, and look, listening to full albums is a whole project, I get it. If you’re going to start anywhere though, I recommend this one.

Coldplay – Lizzo (July 15, 2022)

I love Lizzo. I do. Her music reminds me of that friend that you genuinely love but sometimes they’re just a lot,  sometimes you just want to chill and their energy just doesn’t sit in your spirit. This song is that surprise chill moment where you can take a deep breath and appreciate that they understand the vibes. I can love an unapologetically obnoxious moment but I also like reveling in unexpected tenderness, and that’s what I got from this one, and I’ll take it.

Zipcodes – Joey Bada$$ (July 15, 2022)

Another song I liked immediately. Literally as soon as it started. This is definitely an errand song, I would turn this on when I’m getting in my car headed to the grocery store, or walking around Home Depot, or while I’m folding laundry. It invites you to just ride along without calling your attention away from whatever is in front of you. I think it’s the synth/brass combo, very expertly executed over a strong bass knock. Respect.

Mona Lisa, Mona Lisa – FINNEAS (July 15, 2022)

This is a grungier Forever 21 bop than your typical F21 bop, but it’s a F21 bop nonetheless. Or like a typical Urban Outfitters song. I always have to give y’all at least one in my weekly lists and this one is solid. It’s making me want to go shopping for a corset/baggy jean outfit as we speak.

Handle Me Gently – Ne-Yo (July 15, 2022)

Calling all 2000s R&B lovers, the king of the slow jam bop is back with a classic. This sounds like a Ne-Yo song in all the right ways, and it’s nothing like the modern R&B I’ve grown accustomed to today and that’s what I like about it. Clean, simple, sweet, and still grounded in a Motown/New Jack Swing vibe that’s just very Ne-Yo. The beat reminds me of both “If It Isn’t Love” and “Human Nature”.

Still (ft. Sampha and Getts) – Lil Silva (July 15, 2022)

I saw Sampha in the feature and already knew I’d like this song. I love that the production of this song drives it forward almost sneakily. The words feel like they’re telling the story, but in reality, it’s the beat setting the tone and progressing the narrative– as soon as the beat drops out, you’re brought back into reality, only to get pulled in again. I promise I’m not high writing this.

Musically Opinionated: Teyonna’s Top Ten – 7/1/2022

Happy July! Ya girl was traveling last week and despite my best efforts to keep my ear to the ground for new music and do a write-up for y’all, I really needed to step away from my devices. But we did get a lot of great music for me to sink my teeth into this week! So without further delay, here’s my top picks as we depart from my birthday month and say hi to July:

Good Love (feat. Usher) – City Girls (July 1, 2022)

Off the heels of a very moisturized Tiny Desk concert, my fave has released his newest single and the matching video with City Girls. It’s giving modern skate rink hit meets backyard day party, so you definitely need this on your summer playlist. And I was literally just saying yesterday that Usher really likes the verb “freak” and well, my point is proven here.

No Stoppin’ (feat. Blxst) – Kalan.FrFr (June 24, 2022)

Blxst is slowly making his name as the go-to voice you put on a bop. This is a song you’d hear on a slow night at the club when the DJ still has some self-respect but they don’t need a club banger to keep the drinks flowing at the bar.

Sweet Bounce – DJ Frass, Stefflon Don (June 17, 2022)

The remainder of my summer’s mood is to dance and wind and grind to my heart’s content, so this is the energy I’m waking up to everyday. We dancing in the shower, in the kitchen and in the streets to this one this July.

Rollercoaster (feat. Kenyon Dixon) – Jade Novah (July 1, 2022)

We love Jade Novah in this house, and you know I love when the cover art speaks to a song really well, and this funky celestial image definitely gives you a good sense of the ride this song takes you on. Kenyon Dixon is a great match for the vibes as well, so this song is a very nice addition to the summer love song playlists for your backyard get-togethers.

Sober (with Jeremih) – Nakkia Gold (July 1, 2022)

I know Jeremih is on that list of crooners who weren’t singing to their best on Verzuz last week, but he’s a solid support on this song. I’m not hip to Nakkia Gold but I can appreciate what this song aims to accomplish. The beat lives independent from the melody line but they compliment, reminiscent of someone like Craig David. The lyrics are solid but this production is something I want to listen to over and over again to break it down.

Hot Shit (feat. Ye & Lil Durk) – Cardi B (June 30, 2022)

The queen of the club bop is back, and I can already hear every hip-hop club DJ spinning this one into their set because it goes. It is interesting that City Girls’ new song has a quick sample of The Cha-Cha Slide and this song has one for the Electric Slide… I’m not going to think-piece that to death but just wanted you to know that I peeped. ‘Ye also sounds pretty good here, but Cardi and Durk certainly ate.

Honey (feat. Muni Long) – John Legend (June 17, 2022)

This song has been sitting in my queue for a minute and I’m glad I finally listened to it. The sultry production makes me think this song is meant for a sexy movie scene in a smoky bar. Muni Long’s Ep Public Displays of Affection is also out now so support a beautiful Black woman and stream that too (especially my honorable mention favorite from the project, “Cartier”)!

Lost Me – Giveon (June 24, 2022)

Giveon was one of a few who gifted us with a whole project last week, and here’s to hoping he can perform these live without the mic sabotage. All jokes aside, this song has a nice groove and his solemn tone fits the sound really well– everything I want and expect from Giveon.

Slow Song (with Dragonette) – The Knocks (February 18, 2022)

I heard this song for the first time while I was floating in my friend’s pool in Malibu last week and it matched my summer vibes perfectly. And while yes, I know I’m late as hell, it’s been stuck in my head everyday since, so now I want it stuck in your head. It’s not necessarily what I would call a Forever21 bop, but make no mistake, if I heard this song in Urban I would have to buy something on sheer principle.

<maybe> it’s my fault – WILLOW (June 24, 2022)

I have this thing with eyes so believe me, this cover art is terrifying to me, but the song is REALLY good. Willow is in her BAG with the rock genre, it fits her voice really well. I have a strong fascination and appreciation for electric guitars as well and this song highlights a really great guitar line. 10/10 would recommend.

Musically Opinionated: Teyonna’s Top Ten – 6/17/2022

What a week for music– Mariah Carey was *finally* inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, Beyoncé announced her new album, and we got some new Draaaaaake last night. So let’s not dawdle friends, let’s dive into this week’s top ten newbies:

Jimmy Cook’s (feat. 21 Savage) – Drake (June 17, 2022)

The surprise album that took the world by storm is of course going to be on my list, because I absolutely waited up to listen to this as soon as it dropped. For the record, I’m in the camp of people who firmly believe this is a troll album, and I respect everything about the controversy this release is stirring up, I’m reveling in it even. The last two tracks, “Liability” and “Jimmy Cook’s”, felt like the Drake I was waiting to hear, so take it from me: skip the first twelve tracks. The album title pretty much sums up why.

Miles – SZA (June 10, 2022)

SZA is back on my list again two weeks in a row. I didn’t feature this song last time but it deserves a shout out this week because it’s been on my mind and in my ears since it dropped. While I love “2AM” for its feminine take on PND’s “Come and See Me”, this song gives us something totally new and fresh to explore, and I discover more and more with each listen. Short, sweet, but poignant and full in and of itself.

U-Digg (feat. 42 Dugg & Veeze) – Lil Baby (June 17, 2022)

Approximately 4 seconds into this song, I had my hands up, snapping, thinking to myself, “this sh*t kinda go.” This one gives us a very infectious beat matched with some impeccable flows. Well done, gentlemen. I believe this is one the kids will say just simply slaps.

Favours (ft. Avry) – Jon Vinyl (April 22, 2022)

This song has been on deck for me to listen to for a while but it just kept getting bumped to the backburner and Jon, I’m sorry. This track deserves better! Jon Vinyl just sounds like butter and it’s very easy to get lost in how he just floats along the song, especially as there’s no obvious climax, but the lyrics are sexy in their vulnerable honesty if you can just key in and really listen.

Call Me Everyday (ft. WizKid) – Chris Brown (June 17, 2022)

Chris Brown is unmistakable yet muted on this song and it just works. Truly, my favorite thing about this collaboration is that Chris doesn’t overpower the sound, which he is known to do, and while most of the time it is successful, it’s also predictable. But here he does the opposite and it only elevates the song. That’s the part of music I love most: being delightfully surprised.

Malibu – Preyé (June 10, 2022)

First things first– this cover art is GORGEOUS. I like the subtle complexities of this song. There’s a lot of light vocal layers, a soft brass section, drums and a synth piano? Or is it actually some woodwind instruments? I’m no composer so don’t quote me on any of that, but what I do know is all those layers give the song depth without being overwhelming, so it’s both rooted and steady, all the while refreshing, too.

Keeps On Fallin’ (ft. Ella Mai) – Babyface (June 17, 2022)

Ella Mai has had a tremendous career thus far, collaborating with some legendary producers, writers, and fellow music artists, and she really holds her own each time. And let me find out Mr. Kenneth Edmonds is out here keeping up with these young folks’ flows. This is a balanced pairing and I know they know that.

Heatwave – Raury (June 14, 2022)

I’m new to the Raury wave so put me on, somebody! The production here intrigued me, the hook did its job and hooked me, and his flow about two and a half minutes in confirmed that I’m where I need to be. Let this song wash over your senses and crank out whatever it is you need to get off your plate today so you can enjoy your weekend.

Gotta Move On (ft. Bryson Tiller) – Diddy (June 17, 2022)

A sobering song if I ever heard one. Bryson does what he does best here, give us a refrain and a melody memorable enough to feel like we know the whole song in one listen. Then Diddy gives us just enough to help us to reminisce on the days he was front and center in the studio, but it’s such a brief and humble entrance and soft fade out, I almost wanted more. Idk, I like that.

Summer Moon (ft. Kevin Kaarl) – Leon Bridges (June 17, 2022)

This song feels like the warm shower you take on a chill gloomy morning to wake you up for the day. There’s nothing in particular you need to accomplish today, but you get up anyway because it makes you feel purposeful– determined to get somewhere but actually not pressured to.

The Loss of a Hip-Hop Historian in Combat Jack

by Nick Hamilton (@NickHamiltonLA)

A lawyer, historian, culture mover, podcaster, media mogul, the world truly lost a great person in Reggie Osse aka Combat Jack on Thursday morning. The host of “The Combat Jack Show” and CEO of the Loud Speakers Network lost a battle with colon cancer. Osse made the announcement of him being diagnosed with cancer last October.

The Cornell graduate lawyer represented many artists and labels, such as Jay-Z, Roc-A-Fella, Def Jam to name a few. He’d later transition after being one of the managing editors for The Source Magazine to hosting his own dynamic podcast while representing hip hop well.
Osse’s podcast and style of the interview were unique and amazing in the way he was able to tap into the guest and bring the best out of them. He interviews a variety of guest from The Lox, Ice Cube, Jordan Peele, ESPN‘s Bomani Jones, Jemele Hill and Michael Smith, Cardi B, The Game, Joe Budden, Jeezy, Redman, Wyclef Jean, Steve Lobel, Organized Noize, Mike Will Made It, and many more.

Lost for words right now 🙏🏽 my prayers to the beautiful children and family. “https://twitter.com/Combat_Jack?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw“>@Combat_Jack</a> leaves… <a href=”https://t.co/y1k7huoi9C“>https://t.co/y1k7huoi9C; Angela Yee (@angelayee) <a href=”https://twitter.com/angelayee/status/943514281928093696?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw” “https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js“

Osse held a plethora of hip hop information and was never afraid to reach out to his many fans or help those in need when it came to the business of hip hop. He was hip hop’s most influential voice in moving the culture forward. His legacy will continue to live on through us all, yet they’ll never be another historian quite like Combat Jack.

He is survived by his four children, he was 48 years old.

For me, personally, catching up with Reggie was a moment to pause and reflect. “https://twitter.com/CombatJackShow?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw“>@CombatJackShow</a> three times. each time was like catching up with an old homie who wanted to know what happened since we last spoke; El Flaco (@bomani_jones) “https://twitter.com/bomani_jones/status/943504968824381440?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw“

Bolts could develop true rivalry with Mob Squad in L.A

article

by Nick Hamilton (@NickHamiltonLA)

After a light practice just 24 hours before their scrimmage with the “other” team in Los Angeles — the Rams on Saturday at Stub Hub Center, the Bolts are ready for the rivalry to heat up.

Running back Melvin Gordon is excited at the chance to not only see their home for the next 3 seasons but getting a feel for how the fans will be as the team plays on the field. Yes, this has turned into more of the Gurley vs Gordon rivalry than two teams battling for Los Angeles. Gurley vs. Gordon sounds more like a spy vs spy type of movie or video game than a football rivalry. Traditionally we as sportswriters and even fans have always been the foundations for rivalries and “beefs” whether it be in sports, music, or some form of entertainment.

“That’s my boy,” Gordon said speaking of Gurley. “I’m cool with him, but obviously we compete. I mean the first I didn’t do so well, and I watched him. Then my second year I bounced back. So this year is going to tell it all.”

Granted both running back have not had an easy journey to their third year in the NFL, Gurley had an exceptional rookie, but took the sophomore slump harder than Jagged Edge comeback album .

Gordon had a terrible rookie season, but after an off-season of working out with Adrian Peterson and a renewed mind, he made a dramatic turnaround and finished just three yards shy of 1,000 yards. A healthy Gordon looks to be even more improved under an exciting yet disciplined head coach in Anthony Lynn who’s had good success with running backs.

Now that the Jeff Fisher era ended, in Training Camp Gurley’s approach to the field and attacking the holes is much improved. Gurley seems to have a renewed energy and part of that is due to the infectious attitude of first time head coach Sean McVay who’s also offensively driven.

A tale of two teams, relocations a year apart, new head coaches, and they say this is a get rich town. Both franchises are not only battling for L.A., but for football power.

These two individual are top notch backs, with the right offense and offensive line in place, the sky is truly the limit for both of them. Their running form and approach to the game is truly a work of art.

The fans and us in the media will have to keep it lit all season, to keep the interest, yet if both teams are successful on the field, the “rivalry” will heat up to temperatures unimaginable.

Bolts rookie Lamp out for the year

by Nick Hamilton (@NickHamiltonLA)

The Los Angeles Chargers suffered a huge blow on Wednesday when rookie Forrest Lamp was carted off the field midway through practice.

It was later confirmed that rookie offensive lineman suffered a torn ACL to his right knee where he would miss the entire season. The second pick along with the team were devastated when the news was released. He was on his way to being the team’s starting guard this season.

Lamp was seen limping on his own to the team’s training facility at Jack Hammett Sports Complex in Costa Mesa.

“We’re going to miss him,” head coach Anthony Lynn said. “He was really getting better each day. It’s unfortunate, but like I’ve told him, things happen for a reason.  He’s going to get some time off, so make sure he makes the most of it. But he’ll still be in it. He’s going to be around, and be in it mentally.”

The Bolts will look for someone to step up in his place, and offensive line veteran leader Matt Slauson understands the importance of Lamp’s absence and how much of an opportunity it is for someone else to step in his place now.

“It was really tough to see one of our guys go down,” Slauson said. He’s worked extremely hard and put in a lot (of effort) all spring. So we’re going to grind for him.  He’s going to be with us, and we’re going to grind for him.”

As a four year starter at Western Kentucky, Lamp was a two-time first-team Conference USA pick and third-team All-American.

The Chargers are a tight knit group, a true football family, and many of his teammates expressed well wishes for Lamp’s recovery including Jason Verrett.

“From a mental perspective, it’s going to be tough,” Verrett explained. “I want to tell him this is a chance to get his mind even stronger. You’re going to be dealing with a lot of ups and downs. There’s going to be adversity. I advise him to reach out to other linemen who have dealt with (ACL injuries) in the past to make sure he’s doing the best possible rehab. Make sure he gets all the possible opinions from doctors.”

Verrett himself is finishing up end of rehab on his own ACL injury.

The team will continue to prepare in Training Camp, and hope that they won’t suffer any more serious injuries. However Lamp will not be absence from the minds of any of his teammates this coming season.

With Lamp out, rookie third-round selection Dan Feeney could see some time at right guard for the Chargers.

Tavon Austin has a wider vision on the field

Tavon Austin has a wider vision on the field

by Nick Hamilton (@NickHamiltonLA)

Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Tavon Austin has his sights set on higher expectations, and a wider scope of how to help this team accumulate more victories this season.

On day one of Training Camp on the campus of UC Irvine, Austin had a guard on his surgically-repaired left wrist. Though cautious of his wrist, Austin was ready to lay the smack down on the field during reps.

“I really haven’t been in this offense for so long; probably my fourth time getting out there with the guys,” Austin told reporters. “However he [Sean McVay] needs me to be. Deep threat, short guy, it doesn’t make a difference to me.”

Although he keeps a guarded eye on his wrist, Austin still maintains focus on being the best wide receiver on the field for quarterback Jared Goff and Sean Mannion as they take their reps in practices.

latimes

Several weeks before the 2016 season, Austin signed a four year, $42 million deal, with still quite a bit to prove. Even as a veteran on the field, in his mind he’s coming into camp with a rookie mindset for rookie head coach McVay and the staff.

Now lined up along side fellow wide receiver Robert Woods, Austin hopes the two can become a dynamic duo of sorts, a Batman to Robin, or a Snoop to Dr. Dre if you will.

The two can be a serious vertical threat this season if both can remain healthy. In tough division that has not been won by the Rams in several years, everyone including Austin are ready to prove a lot of naysayers wrong this season.

The Rams expect Austin to be a large part of their offensive schemes, as the coaching staff can create different ways on effectively using the versatile wide out. Cooper Kupp could also see some time on the field if the Rams elect to go 3 wide more this season

A more balanced day for L.A. Rams in Training Camp

by Nick Hamilton (@NickHamiltonLA)

After the Los Angeles Rams dominated Day one of Training Camp, the offense woke up made their presence felt on day two, which thoroughly impressed head coach Sean McVay.

Tavon Austin made two spectacular plays, one where made a aerodynamic catch just as the ball touched the ground for an incomplete catch. The second play when he ran a sweep to the right side before cutting up the middle for a would-be touchdown.

trainingcampla

“It’s exciting for anybody that plays this position,” Austin explained about playing under McVay’s system. “Everybody wants the ball. Everybody wants the opportunity to get the ball. So I’m definitely excited to be in the offense, I just want to keep working every day.”

Former Broncos cornerback Keyvon Webster made life on the field hard for former USC Trojan and Buffalo Bills WR Robert Woods, who brook up an impressive catch by Woods in 1-on-1 drills. Woods was still solid as he connected with quarterback Jared Goff on several passes thrown to him.

“He’s done excellent. He’s playing both outside and inside for us. He’s competing well in the run-game,” McVay said about Woods. “Kind of like we talked about the other day, he’s been what we had hoped. He’s a complete receiver, not really limited in any of the routes he can run.”

RB Todd Gurley who looks to have a bounce back season this year, looked refreshed and hit a lot of holes as he burst through the back field on several runs. His approach to the game seems to be with a renewed energy, which is not surprising since the attitude of McVay is infectious through the team. Gurley could be on pace for another 1,000 yard season, as long as he stays healthy, he will accomplish just that.

“Todd [Gurley] did a nice job. I think when you look at just the running back position as a whole, one of the things that makes him special is his ability to break tackles, so a little hard to get a true evaluation of what a special player he is until you get in those game situations,” McVay said. “But, I think in terms of doing all the little things the right way and being a player both in the pass and the run game and being mindful in protection – I think he’s done an excellent job. He’s definitely setting the standard in that room for sure.”

With the defense continuing to impress everyone under defensive coordinator Wade Philips, The defensive line, in particular, has continued to the transition from a 4-3 to a 3-4. As they continue to adjust daily, the Rams defense is showcasing a lot of depth upfront. Defensive tackle Michael Brockers, Dominique Easley, and Ethan Westbrooks took reps with the first-team. Alec Olgatree looks sharp despite the absence of Aaron Donald who continues to holdout due to a contract dispute

Clayton Kershaw racks up another victory for Kershaw’s Challenge

by Nick Hamilton (@NickHamiltonLA)

On a warm Thursday night settled in the confines of historic Dodger Stadium, Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw host the 5th annual Ping Pong 4 Purpose event raising awareness and funds for Kershaw’s Challenge.

Kershaw’s Challenge is a magnificent charity that raises support for children at home and globally, the Kershaws invite everyone to be apart of the organization. They also gave away backpacks with the Dream Center in Los Angeles on Saturday, July 22nd. From Los Angeles and Dallas to the Dominican Republic and Zambia, Africa, Kershaw’s Challenge has dedicated support to transform the lives of children, serving with partner organizations including the Los Angeles-based Dream Center, CURE International in the Dominican Republic, Arise Africa-Zambia, and the Dallas-based Behind Every Door.

With a specific emphasis on the betterment of children and their health globally.

With a back injury that has once again kept Kershaw from participating in his ping pong tourney, he was still the life of the party. A party that included many A-list guests Jimmy Kimmel, Jack Black, Magic Johnson, and teammates rookie Cory Bellinger, Corey Seager, Joc Pederson, Yasiel Puig, Adrian Gonzalez, Andre Ethier, Rich Hill, Justin Turner, Chris Taylor (CT3). Also in attendance were actors Jason Bateman and Justin Theroux (Ozark) and Lakers head coach Luke Walton were serious on the ping pong tables.

Ping Pong being his favorite sport to play outside of racking strikes on the mound, all Kershaw could do is watch and encourage from the sidelines.

However the biggest news of the night didn’t come from Dodger players or Kershaw for that matter, but from one Magic Johnson, who disseminated a very strong message to Dodger fans and the baseball world.

“The Dodgers are going to win the World Series this year,” Johnson said. “This is our year.”

Kershaw presented Johnson with the Kershaw’s Challenge Impact Award, in honor of the charitable work Johnson and his foundation have done.

“Get healthy,” Johnson told Kershaw in accepting the award. “Lead us. That’s the only ring I don’t have, and I need that ring.”

Of course the crowd erupted in cheers and screams when Johnson made the declaration.

With great food and festivities in the outfield of Dodger Stadium, many items were also available for auction such as one of only two baseballs made available from Clayton
Kershaw’s no-hitter. The opening bid was $5500.

The night and blue carpet could not be complete without Kershaw’s traditional festive Ping Pong socks.

Mike Singer and Michael Weisberg were declared the winners of the Ping Pong 4 Purpose tournament where Kershaw handed the dynamic duo their trophy.

Chargers embrace the change of Training Camp

by Nick Hamilton (@NickHamiltonLA)

The Los Angeles Chargers have made their official pilgrimage to friendly confines of Costa Mesa to a crowd of nearly 6,000 fans, eagerly anticipating seeing their favorite player come down the high-five line.

After Kobe Bryant came and spoke to the team on Saturday, the team was fired up and ready for day one of Training Camp.

“This is really better than I anticipated,” Philip Rivers said regarding the large turnout on Sunday. “Not that I didn’t have high hopes or excitement about the fan base that’s here, and really all over Southern California, (but) I didn’t anticipate this! My rookie year, granted we were coming off a bad season, but we were in Carson. I was only there for one day of camp, but literally I think there were 12 people there. I’m serious.  Literally, you could count 12 bodies there. So I wasn’t sure, but there was a lot of excitement.”

Unsure of the turnout, the Bolts are in a new city, new stadium and surrounded by new faces, yet they have the task of not only winning on the football field but winning the fan base over in Los Angeles and Orange County this season. Winning does cure all, not only is this season’s team immensely talented, but the major factor they must all overcome is staying healthy. Running back Melvin Gordon who just three yards shy of a 1,000 yard season due to injury looks to bounce back in full motion. He looked well and seemed to have a renewed energy on the field in Day 1 of Training Camp. Keenan Allen who also returning from injury looked pretty swift on some routes, however the sophomore tight end Hunter Henry looked as though he didn’t miss a beat in the off-season. Henry ran some good routes however made one spectacular catch in the end zone that made of the fans and media onlooker in awe of his skills.

With the return of above guys mentioned, there was one offensive weapon that Rivers won’t have in camp is rookie WR Mike Williams who will not be available in Training Camp due to lower back injury. Williams continues to rehab his back according to doctor’s order, and the team is confident that he can avoid surgery.

“We have the talent,” Rivers said. “You don’t look around and go, ‘Gosh, we’re missing this.  If we had one of that. We really need this. We’re almost there.’  I think you look at it, and that doesn’t mean I’m predicting us to win it all, but we have the talent. Now, it’s building the camaraderie, the toughness and the fight.  All of those things, the togetherness and intangibles, and obviously you have to play well.”

The defense looked impactful and excited on Day 1 of Training Camp led by Joey Bosa, Melvin Ingram, yet were without Jason Verrett who is rehabbing a leg injury. However Verrett could return sometime next week, and this year will be huge for him as he looks to make a significant impact on defense this season for the Bolts. Jahleel Addae had many run stuffs, including one where he sliced left to stop the running back behind the line of scrimmage.

Newly signed back up quarterback Cardale Jones looked a bit rusty, but will improved as he continues to get accustomed to the new playbook by head coach Anthony Lynn, who has quite a bit of confidence in the young quarterback. Jones has a great football IQ and with time should retain a roster spot in on that quarterback depth chart.

Jones is adjust nicely not only to his new teammates but to Southern California, the weather and the fan base.

Bonnie-Jill Laflin makes presence known on VH1 and on other project

Actress, FOX Sports reporter and activist Bonnie-Jill Laflin appeared on Dash Radio’s “The Morning After with Nick Hamilton” over the weekend and had some interesting things to say regarding her appearances on VH1’s “Basketball Wives”, and her other  projects.

As controversial as Basketball Wives is, Bonnie-Jill maintained her composer on the show, which is simply isn’t easy.

“Alot of people wanted know why I even joined the show, but Shaunie O’Neal (show’s executive producer) came to me who’s a good friend of mine, and she said wanted to go in different direction,” Laflin explained to the host Nick Hamilton and co-host James Allen. “We wanted to bring in a woman who’s not a girlfriend or a wife, but more so around the NBA.”

If you all recall a couple of months ago there was scene where the ladies were coming together at an event and there was serious tension between one of the stars Jackie Christie (wive former NBA star Doug Christie) and Laflin. Christie has always been known to rub the all of the cast members at different times the wrong way a time or two. However in this moment, she accused Laflin of lying on her, and was ready to fight for her reputation. As Laflin appeared to figure out why Christie was so mad, both ladies had to be held back from one another before a full MMA type fight ensued. As the two were brought closer to each other, Bonnie-Jill Laflin decided to take the high rode and depart for her limo before things really got out of control.

//media.mtvnservices.com/embed/mgid:arc:video:vh1.com:daa43e00-66cc-4a6e-8a4c-b0ce55cf1658”

“Yes I always try to take the high road because I’m at an age where I’m not trying to get physical fights, and some of the women on their don’t act their own age,”  the fabulous 40-year old Laflin said regarding Christie. “I’m different than all the other ladies because I don’t want to get married, I don’t want to have kids and I pay my own bills.”

Laflin also explained who she is good friends with on the show beside O’Neal like Evelyn Lozada, who left the show at one point to rebuild her image and has since returned in a major way. Yes the show is full of drama, and everyone gets an opportunity to travel into the lives of the ladies on the show, as fans have an opportunity to connect with their favorite cast members weekly by watching.

To Jackie Christie’s credit as lively and capricious as she appears to be, she is certainly entertaining to watch on prime time television. Christie is the common denominator in the drama.

“All of sudden she [Jackie Christie] wanted to start a fight with me. In my twenties it would’ve been something, but I’m not trying to fight you. Put your hands on me and see what happens.”

However episodes later on Christie did apologize to Laflin.

Laflin is huge on women empowerment and her only displeasure with the show is that the ladies on the show don’t have to always look like they hate each other and can’t get along. Laflin explained that she enjoys the show, and also told about some other projects that she’s involved in with PETA and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.

“I’m not saying everyone should go vegan, just have more of a human way you treat these animals before you kill them.”

Laflin also adds clarity to her critics who thinks she’s more of a animal lover than having compassion for human.”I’m a humanitarian as well as an animal activist. I feel I want to be a voice for those who need it regardless.”

On her recent ad, Laflin said she got the idea for it from ESPN The Body Magazine vision, and she just wanted to represent strength, passion and get the message out about PETA.

Also be on the lookout for her new show that will feature many powerful people in the sports world including her former boss and mentor Jerry Jones coming soon.

Beautiful, intelligent and fully driven, Bonnie-Jill Laflin has a heart of gold, and powerful voice that continues to be heard as she strives to make a powerful impact in lives across the globe.

Sam Darnold is giving you the best him this season

Sam Darnold is giving you the best him this season

by Nick Hamilton (@NickHamiltonLA)

Entering his second season at quarterback for the USC Trojans, Sam Darnold has learned many things in the off season that will enable to succeed in the Pac-12.

After a 1-3 start in 2016, and head coach Clay Helton made a bold move at quarterback giving young Darnold the opportunity to lead the team in another direction. With the proper father like coaching from coach Helton and a text out to Heisman Trophy winner Matt Leinart, the Utah loss was a distant memory for the young Darnold. For Helton and USC, the Darnold experiment worked as the Trojans remained undefeated up unto the Rose Bowl. His tenacity, his level of ‘fight on’ approach to every game led them to a stunning win over Penn State in an epic Rose Bowl game.

Darnold’s play sent not only college football, but NFL teams in a frenzy. Everyone who was anyone wanted to be apart of the Darnold experience. He became the man, and still is, yet he made sure to always be the best him on and off the field. A lesson he learned from coach Helton, but also witnessed from NFL royalty (Peyton, Eli, Archie and Cooper Manning) when he attended the Manning Camp a few months ago.

https://youtu.be/jbQRjUh1R9U

Depite the national praise coming from coaches, fans and media analyst, Darnold remains focused and eager to take the field in Training Camp as prepare for Western Michigan. With a Mamba-like mentality, he truly understands what could be at stake for his Trojans this season.

“A national championship, that’s our ultimate goal,” Darnold said. “We can’t do that without winning the (Pac-12) South and winning the Pac-12.”

With the Trojans favored to win the Pac-12 South and the conference possibly, Darnold will elect to let his play speak volumes for him.

“I’ve grown in many ways, and learning how to handle that, it’s been amazing. It’s been a journey,” Darnold said. “At the same time, with team success comes individual success. I’m not naïve to that, so we have to do well as a team.”

The Pac-12 are loaded with many teams (Washington, Oregon, UCLA, Stanford) trying to take a bite out of the destined for greatness quarterback Sam Darnold.

If he takes the Heisman Trophy this coming season, Darnold will have a big decision to make this spring. Will he continue his college football campaign at USC or take his talents to play on Sundays in the NFL?

https://youtu.be/EFUvb3hON_I

He definitely has the skill set to continue set the power 5 conference on fire. With quarterbacks like Russell Wilson, Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees whom Darnold studies and looks up too, it’s only a matter of time before we could a combo of all of these quarterbacks in him.

Lonzo is more like Kobe than a Big Baller

by Nick Hamilton (@NickHamiltonLA)

On Wednesday the Lakers and Lonzo Ball made headwaves, for a different reason. No, it didn’t include Lonzo’s talkative and gigantic personality of a father Lavar, it had everything to do with what was on his feet.

For approximately a year, we’ve all heard about Lavar creating and trying to take his Big Baller Brand to the next level, in billions of ways. As his attempts to partner with Nike, Under Armor, and Adidas failed, Lavar decided to take his “talents” the various media circuits to promote his brand that his sons, Lonzo, LaMelo, and LiAngelo would model.

Finally Lonzo hit the NBA scene with a huge splash by being drafted by the hometown team, the Los Angeles Lakers as the second overall pick. His summer league debut was the highest anticipated in years. It was met with cheers and support, and some with hate and disdain. Not so much for the bright, faded afro wearing young man with the golden smile, but for his father who has rubbed many in NBA circles the wrong way — with his mouth!

The Summer League opening debut was a poor showing, however being the fantastic player Lonzo is, he bounced right back the next night against the Celtics with a triple double, 11 points, 11 rebounds, 11 assist.

Wednesday he continued to impress, however instead of wearing the BBB shoes that have been over hyped and overpriced by his father. Lonzo hit the court with purple Kobe AD’s by Nike. Which caught the attention of many including Lebron James, who sat court side and later commented on the shoes via social media, “Just Dot It!”.

Interesting enough, Lonzo finished with 36 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds in a 103-102 victory over the 76ers.

Catch Peter Schaffer on the premiere of ‘The Agent’ on the Esquire Network tonight

Esquire Network Orders NFL Draft Docu-Series ‘The Agent’

‘The Agent’ gives a look of what happens behind the scenes.

It shows how relationships are built, with the agents trying to sell the kid and his parents on what they can do for them as a client, without being too pushy or overbearing. And of course, there’s should be additional interest in Hollywood circles because of the insight into what exactly an agent does, although the power dynamic is somewhat flipped here, since at this stage, anyway, the 21-year-old players are holding all the cards.

Agents only earns 3% commission on the playing contract can jump to a higher percentage on those other relationships. There’s also a rather sobering moment as an agent watches a player he’s been pursuing get injured during a televised game, seeing the prospect he’s already invested time and energy in writhing on the ground, and potentially watching his chances of a pro career dealt a major setback.

Peter Schaffer has been a registered sports agent for 28 years and is known for negotiating some of the most lucrative deals in NFL history, such as Joe Thomas (Highest Paid Lineman NFL History – Browns) and Barry Sanders in 1997, the highest paid player in NFL history.

Currently representing more than 35 players in the National Football League, Schaffer has become a highly regarded expert on the business of sports, teaching at the University of Denver, writing a weekly column for the Washington Post and appearing on ABC Nightly News, ESPN, The Dan Patrick Show, HBO Sports and 60 Minutes to name a few.

2015 Draftees: Mario Edwards, Jr. (Florida St) – Oakland Raiders 2nd Round, Gerrod Holliman (Louisville) – Pittsburgh Steelers 7th Round and Dexter McDonald, Oakland Raiders 7th Round.”

Drea Dominique Releases ‘Roll’: A New Music Friday Highlight

MUSICALLY OPINIONATED: New Music Friday — Drea Dominique’s “Roll”

Every Friday, new music floods the timeline, and most of it is forgettable by Monday. Not this one.

The Single

Drea Dominique’s “Roll,” the latest release from her upcoming album Romantic Tragedies, is the standout of this week’s drop — and it’s not close.

“‘Roll’ is about surrendering to a feeling you can’t control — letting go instead of fighting it,” Drea Dominique says. “This song is one of the most honest moments on the album, and I can’t wait for people to hear it.”

That honesty is the whole point. “Roll” isn’t a heartbreak record — it’s the record that comes after the heartbreak, when you finally stop fighting the pull toward something good.

Who Is Drea Dominique?

For listeners just discovering her, Drea Dominique is a Miami-based R&B artist known for blending soulful vocals with candid, emotionally driven songwriting. Romantic Tragedies marks a new chapter in her sound — a project that explores the full arc of love, from the wreckage to the moments worth surrendering to.

Why It Works

  • The vocal restraint. She doesn’t oversing the moment — she lets it breathe.
  • The concept. “Rolling” with a feeling instead of resisting it is a simple idea, executed with real specificity.
  • The rollout. The cover art — two hands intertwined — does exactly what good art direction should: it tells you the song’s emotional temperature before you press play.

Keep Exploring

If “Roll” hits for you, don’t stop there — dive into the rest of Romantic Tragedies for the full emotional arc, or check back for our upcoming review of the album once it drops.

Over to You

Have you ever had to stop fighting a feeling and just let it happen? Tell us about the moment you finally rolled with it instead of resisting.

The Verdict

Allen Lazard is Returning to the Green Bay Packers

Allen Lazard, via Instagram

It’s official! Our very own Allen Lazard has signed a one-year tender offer with the Green Bay Packers to remain on the team for the next season.

Lazard is the team’s top returning receiver and one of the most versatile offensive players in the league. As he enters a contract season, he’s set to push his boundaries on some of his career-best records he set in 2021: receptions (40), yards (513), and touchdowns (8), with a career-high of 60 targets and averaging an impressive 15.9 yards per catch. Despite missing 2.5 games last season, these numbers placed Lazard close to WR2 behind former teammate Davante Adams.

As one of the premier second and third level run-blocking receivers in the league, Lazard’s return to Green Bay could be the final piece to an offense that bodes one of the most diverse sets of threat options for the next season. At 6-5 and nearly 230 pounds, Lazard is a large option for Aaron Rodgers, with a history of performing in high leverage game situations and on special teams when needed.

At Green Bay’s off-season minicamp last week, coach Matt LaFleur had this to say about Lazard: “We obviously would love him to be here with us. He’s a big part of our football team, not only just by his play but by how he goes out there and works and helps the other guys along.”

The trust that Lazard has built up with teammate Aaron Rodgers led Rodgers to express his confidence in Lazard becoming the Packers’ no. 1 receiver: “He’s been our dirty-work guy for most of his career here. Now he’s getting an opportunity to be a No. 1 receiver. I’m not worried about him at all stepping into that role. I’ve talked to him a lot. I know how he takes care of his body, and I know he’ll be ready when he’s here.”

Lazard’s growth over the past three years is one of the reasons the Packers were able to move on from Davante Adams and Marquez Valdes-Scantling this offseason. He’s developing into a true number one wide receiver in the NFL, and we’re looking forward to seeing him take it to the next level this next season.

UnRestricted Live: A Night of Sexy R&B

Event flyer for UnRestricted Live presents: RnB, a live performance at the Roxy Theater in West Hollywood featuring T.A. Thomas, Davion Farris, and Tone Stith. Sounds by DJ MoonBaby. Wednesday, June 22nd.

Last night, the stage at the Roxy Theater in West Hollywood was graced by the presence of some of the sexiest emerging male R&B talent coming up in the industry today. Kicking off the start of the BET Awards Weekend celebrations in Los Angeles, this was the most recent installment of the RnB series hosted by Unrestricted Live, dedicated to providing a platform for the rising stars of rhythm and blues to connect with their fans.

T.A. Thomas, former band member of the group Next Town Down, opened the show in a striking all-white ensemble– his physical presence was as smooth as the vocals he shared with the eager early audience. We were in for a treat, hearing exclusive sneak peeks to music yet to be officially released on his up and coming EP. Rounding out his performance with a cover of Mario’s crowd-favorite classic “Just a Friend 2002” set the stage for a comprehensive display of his vocal range and agility, riffs and runs for days all over the recognizable Biz Markie refrain.

Davion Farris followed up next with a chill set of original music that pulled the growing crowd in closer and held them captive with his honest lyrics. Displaying some moisturized and healthy vocals, Davion Farris belted above the band with confidence and precision singing some of his fan favorites, such as “Tunnel Vision”, off of his most recent album release, Moved. Family was in the audience as well, as Davion’s brother, rapper and songwriter D Smoke, was seen front and center cheering him on throughout the entire set.

And finally, RCA Records recording artist Tone Stith rounded out the night with a set full of his sexiest and most popular single. Backed by dancers and tight choreo, Tone gave the packed house a full show, reminding everyone that his credentials and national tours are the product of his raw and versatile talents. Tone Stith was later joined onstage by surprise guest Maeta for a duet of their collaboration “Something in the Water”, and fans were then treated to a taste of Maeta’s vocals as well, as she performed her hit single “Bitch Don’t Be Mad.” Tone returned to close the night out with more songs from his 2021 album FWM, ending the night on a high by taking his shirt off (very Jodeci style) just in time for his guitar solo, and playing hits such as “Devotion” and “FWM”.

To officially end the festivities for the night, the house wished host and co-producer DJ MoonBaby a happy birthday before departing. Overall, the event was a successful showcase of the rising male stars of R&B, and left fans eager for more music, and definitely more UnRestricted Live.
